If you are wondering if an air purifier is really useful? Guess what, I was thinking the same until I started using AirMax8L by Okaysou. Now,  my perspective on air purifiers has changed completely. After using this air purifier for almost two months now, I am ready to offer my two cents. Let us dive right into the Okaysou AirMax review.

What exactly is AirMax and what does it do?

AirMax is a portable air purifier system that is capable of purifying the air inside a closed space of about 800 sq. ft. In other words, AirMax removes all the harmful contaminants and pollutants from the air around you. It does so with the help of a dual-duo filtration system which is way better than your HVAC filtration. We shall talk more about this soon.

What’s in the Box?

I got this product via Amazon and it came in a pretty large box. The box contents are,

  • The air purifier itself (filters are inside it)
  • User guide
  • Warranty card

First Impressions

The purifier is made up of plastic. The top surface is painted black while the rest of the body is white. It has got a basic look and I am not so fond of it.

Honestly, most air purifiers look exactly like a trash can and AirMax8L is no different

On the top, you have the touch controls and air outlet

On the back, you have air inlets and filter section

The product is super lightweight and carrying it around is super easy because it has got a sweet handle on both sides. Also, you will have to make sure to keep the purifier at a distance of at least 5 ft from a wall. This is to make sure the air inlet is not blocked or obstructed.

Although the design is okay, I wish it was more aesthetic. If you have wooden floors and dark-colored chairs, the white-colored air purifier does not look great.

AirMax8L Features

Let us now have a look at some of the important features of this air purifier. Although I tried to cover everything, there could be some missing points. If you need more information on any of the features, just let me know via the comment section and I will be happy to answer.

Covers Large Room

Coverage is an important aspect when you are purchasing an air purifier. Being a mid-sized purifier, AirMax8L covers up to 800 sq. ft of indoor area. I said indoor because it does not work outdoors where the air is not recirculated. Even though it is capable of covering 800 sq. ft, the company recommends the device for 500 sq. ft. That is because of the number of air circulation. The following table gives you an idea.

Room Size Number of times the air recirculated / hour
800 sq. ft. 1.5
500 sq. ft. 3
320 sq. ft. 5

For example, if you place the device in your living room which is 500 sq. ft. in area, the purifier cleans and circulates the air 3 times per hour. The more frequently it recirculates, the better it is.

Also, if you are wondering, most of the rooms in a house is well under 500 sq. ft. Most of the apartment living rooms are under 500 sq. ft and most kitchens are under 320 sq. ft. So, this purifier is perfect for any mid-sized house

Medical Grade Ultra-Duo Filtration

This is the core of any purifier. Most basic air purifiers use HEPA filters that can only eliminate basic contaminants. In fact, the filter in your centralized AC system is so basic (unless you have a premium filter) that it can only filter basic pollutants like pollen mites and lint.

But fortunately, AirMax8L uses a 5 stage filtration system that can eliminate almost any contaminant as small as 0.25 microns. There are two main filters in the device but those two filters have different layers which in turn act as additional filters. It is better to explain it in an image. So, the following picture shows you the structure of the filtration and the particles it eliminates.

How about the Coronavirus?

We don’t know much about COVID 19 particle size but the initial studies found it to be between 50 and 200 nanometers which is much smaller than 0.25 microns. So, this purifier may not be able to filter coronavirus. I would recommend advanced filters like AirSoap for that purpose.

Replacing Air Filters

You need to replace both the filters once in a while. It entirely depends on your usage. If you use the device 24×7, the filters may not last over 3 months. So, use the device only when needed or set a schedule for it. I have no idea how long the filters last but

Simple Controls

The device has five touch buttons on the top surface. The buttons are very responsive and easy to use. The fan control button lets you change the fan speed among low, medium and high. I always use the device in low mode since it is super quiet.

You also have a child lock button. You press the button for 3 seconds and the child lock gets activated. When it is on, none of the other buttons work making it safe if you have kids in the house. You can turn off the child lock by pressing the button for another 3 seconds.

The other buttons include the power on/off button, sleep button which turns off the LED on the surface. You also have a timer button with which you can set the turn-off timer. There are four options, 1, 2 4 and 8 hours. No matter what button you press, you hear a beep sound.

Apart from these, there is a filter change indicator on the surface. The purifier automatically notifies you when it is time to change the filter. The replacement filters are available here.

Quiet Operation

I love this feature. The fan is so quiet that if I am 20 ft away from the device, I wouldn’t hear anything. Please note that this is under low fan speed. If you set it high, you can even hear the sound from outside the room. I always keep it low because, for my daily activity, mild filtration is enough. But if you are a family of 3 or 4 people, you can either run the purifier for a few hours at high speed or keep it on the whole day at low speed. The following video gives you an idea of how quiet it is.

Power Consumption

If you are wondering how much power this purifier consumes, here is the answer. At low and medium speed, it consumes about 32 watts and at high speed, the consumption is around 48 watts.

My Experience with AirMax8L

I have been using this purifier for almost 2 months now and I have had no issues with it whatsoever. I keep it in my living room which is about 400 sq. ft. I don’t keep it on throughout the day because I live alone, don’t go outside, so there is little to no chance of having pollutants inside. But I do run it for an hour daily. Apart from that, I use the device when cooking. It has been effective against cooking smells. During normal use, I keep it at low speed but during cooking, I keep it at high speed.

Also, I have a dust allergy and before I had this purifier, I would get nose congestion and sneeze at least once a week. But after I started using this, I rarely get congestion.

Apart from this, I tested the purifier on smokes (I burnet a paper sheet for this). The purifier was effective against the smell as well as the smoke but it took a bit of time to get rid of the smell fully.

One thing I don’t like about the product is that it is not smart. If there was a smartphone app, I could have easily set a daily schedule to turn the purifier on for one hour during the day and one hour at night. It would have been so convenient.

I really wish it had smart features like voice control, smartphone app, etc. Scheduling would have been easier.

How to use AirMax Purifier?

Using this purifier is super simple. When you receive the product, the filter will not be active and you will have to open the plastic wrap and insert the filters manually. Here is a quick tutorial,

  1. Open the back cover of the purifier
  2. Take out the filters (you will find two different filters, the white one is the HEPA filter and the black one is the Carbon filter)
  3. Remove the plastic wrap on both the filters
  4. Insert the black filter first (make sure the black side is facing you)
  5. Now insert the white filter (make sure the white side is facing you)
  6. Close the back cover
  7. Turn on the Purifier, you are done!

While handling the filters, make sure your hands and your surroundings are clean

Key Takeaways

  • AirMax8L is equipped with 5 layer purification system
  • It can eliminate viruses, bacteria, mold, chemicals, allergens, dust, hair, smoke and a few more particles
  • The design is okayish, don’t confuse it with a trash can lol
  • The controls are just fine
  • The purifier needs to be placed at least a few feet away from the wall. This way, the air inlet is not blocked
  • The low-speed setting is super quiet but if you prefer some white noise during your sleep, set it at medium or high
  • Based on your usage, the filters need to be replaced. Each filter costs $18 on Amazon. You also have an indicator that lights up when the filter is due for replacement
  • Power consumption is 32 watts at low speed and 48 watts at high speed
  • You also have a 5 year warranty on the purifier

Final Verdict

Having an air purifier at home is a good idea. If you are like me who is allergic to dust particles, it will be a game-changer. There are so many air purifiers on the market but most of them are supremely expensive and overpriced. Okaysou AirMax8L, on the other hand, is very affordable yet effective. If you are in the market for an entry-level air purifier, go with AirMax8L. If you are considering the purifier for a larger space, say your office, I would recommend something advanced like AirSoap.
