Aventon, a pioneer in electric bikes has recently launched Aventure 2 which is an upgrade over their previous Aventure model. I was curious to understand the difference between these models as the upgrade was launched at the same price point.

I have tried to curate these models side by side to help understand the key differences and choose the right model. So here it is Aventure 2 vs. Aventure comparison.

The exact models being compared in this article are given below.

First Impressions

Both Aventure and Aventure 2 e-bikes are designed exactly the same. At the first glance, one can hardly identify the version of the e-bike. However, Aventure 2 comes with a built-in rear rack which was an add-on in the previous version. Both of these electric bikes are available in Step-Through and Step-Over versions.

Aventon Step Through is available in two sizes – Small/Medium and Medium/Large to fit your height. The S/M is for riders between 4’11” and 5’7″, while the M/L is for riders ranging from 5’7″ to 6’1″. Both sizes have the same stand-over height of 485mm and the saddle height differs.

Aventure Step Over is available in three sizes, Small for riders between 5’1″ – 5’9″(643mm Standover Height), Medium for riders between 5’7″ – 5’11” (665mm Standover Height) and Large for 5’11” – 6’4″ (713mm Standover Height)

Aventon 2 Step Through has the same variants as the previous version but with a stand-over height of 478mm.

However Aventon 2 Step Over comes in only two sizes, Regular for people between 5’3″ – 5’10” (665mm Standover Height) and Large for people between 5’10” – 6’4″ (713mm Standover Height).

There is not much difference when it comes to weight. Aventure and Aventure 2 almost weigh the same ~75lbs which might seem a bit heavy especially if you are staying on the top floor.

Both are powered by the same battery and motor but the range differs a lot due to the use of torque sensors. Basically, the Torque sensor is what makes Aventure 2 stand out from the rest.

Let us try to dive into the hype of torque sensors to see if it actually makes a difference. Traditionally e-bikes use a cadence sensor, which is cheaper compared to torque sensor. This senses the rotation of the pedal and sends the signal to the motor to work. The power generated by the motor depends on the pedal assist level and the effort on pedaling.

Basically, the more fast the rider pedals, the less motor power is used to maintain the speed. When the rider pedals slower, more motor power kicks in to carry you forward. (Internally Pedal Assist turns on and off based on your assist level and pedaling speed.)

For Example, When you start initially, the motor output will be maximum and as you gain momentum, power reduces and once you reach the threshold the power reduces even further. This also depends on the pedal assist level. At level 1, the maximum motor power maybe 25% and at level 5 it might be 100% which doesn’t require pedaling.

But when it comes to the torque sensor, the power generated by the motor is directly proportional to the power of pedaling. More force the rider pedals, the torque sensor increases the output of the motor and vice versa. All this happens in real-time amplifying your efforts.

Based on the pedal assist level, the pedaling force increase will wary. For Example, At a low level the pedaling force may increase by 50% and at the highest level it may increase by 250%.

Due to this riders will feel intuitive and the range increases considerably as the motor doesn’t put much energy just to maintain the preset PAS level speeds saving the battery.

The downside is you have to continuously provide the pedaling force for the motor to be engaged.

Aventon Aventure vs Aventon Aventure 2 – Which one to Choose?

Since Aventure 2 is an upgrade over its previous model, nothing much has changed when it comes to looks, motor or battery. Also, due to the new model, Aventure has been offered a discount.

Ultimately the choice comes down to your use case:

Choose Aventure 2 if:

  • Need a smooth drive/ better ride quality
  • More range is required
  • More physical activity

Choose Aventure if:

  • Need an easier ride (Less effort to engage motor)
  • Low on budget
